Alameda County Sheriff's Office (ACSO) Advisory: Alameda County Sheriff's Office applicants may enroll in the CCW safety course only upon receiving notification to do so, after approval of their application with ACSO. The CCW safety course (option of 8 or 16 hours) will not include the range qualification. The CCW safety course is education, the range qualification is the test of what has been learned from the course. The range qualification is a separate 4 hour course. See the Alameda CCW Qualification page on this website. ACSO Applicants are required to successfully complete both courses.
* Please note that the Alameda SO, Central Marin PD, Marin SO, San Francisco PD, San Mateo SO, Santa Clara SO, Solano SO, and Sonoma SO require you apply and get approved by them prior to enrolling in the training class.
Please remember the permit is specific to the exact gun(s) you wish to carry. The Make, Model, Caliber and Serial Number of each gun will be listed on your permit. These are the only guns you are allowed to carry. Additionally, the gun(s) must be registered in your name with the State of California prior to applying and putting them on your application.
Day One of this two day class, takes place in our indoor classroom. Complimentary coffee, breakfast snacks, and bottled water are provided. Students learn the legal considerations for carrying a concealed handgun, including a comprehensive look into the laws regarding the use of lethal force, civil and criminal liability, carry restrictions, and more.
Day Two of this two-day class is a detailed shooting course, and shooting is from the holster. Students learn to safely present the handgun from the holster, draw from concealment, perform emergency reloads, clear malfunctions, address threats to the side and rear, how to apply the fundamentals of shooting to result in accurate fire, and more.
Students should be familiar with the operation of their handgun and basic handgun safety prior to enrolling in this class. We strongly recommend that new handgun owners first complete our Beginner's Pistol Introduction or our Women's Beginner Pistol Introduction class, prior to enrolling in this course.
Completion of this course also provides sufficient proof of training for the Arizona, Florida, Virginia and Utah non-resident CCW permits, too. These non-resident permits are available, by mail, to law-abiding California residents and together are recognized in these 33 states outside of California:
Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Wyoming.
Utah, Arizona, Florida, and Virginia are “shall issue” to those applicants who clear the required background check, and application is done by mail. These permits are valid in 33 states. You do not need to apply at each state. For example, Utah alone will give you 32 states, outside of California, that you can carry in. You do not need to have the California permit to be eligible for these non-resident permits. Applications for the Utah and Arizona permits are provided and completed during the class. Students can download the applications for Florida and Virginia by clicking on these blue hyperlinks.
Fingerprinting services are available at the class for a modest fee of $25 per card. If you want both Utah (needs 1 card) and Arizona (needs 2 cards), you will need to bring $75 cash.
